This week on The Let Yourself Sparkle Podcast, we talk about the connection between art and happiness. Research tells us that greater creativity breeds greater happiness and that the creative process alone is a source of joy for a lot of people. It was discovered by neuro-biologist Semir Zeki, at the University of London, that even looking at art created by someone else is correlated to an increase in dopamine and activity in the brains frontal cortex, which boosts feelings of joy!

“Flow”- when you’re completely immersed in what you’re doing, is noted by psychologists to be one of life’s highly enjoyable states of being. Many people experience a flow state when they are immersed in a creative project.

Amanda Anderson, founder of Sketched and Sealed tells her story of how art saved her life when she was struggling with postpartum depression. “I kept finding myself locked in a closet coloring. I felt the desire for a creative outlet to help me embrace all the emotions and cope with what I was feeling.” Through art, she was able to find purpose and direction and she built a community around it to boost self esteem, resilience and happiness.

In this episode, I also share my own story with depression and how getting back into art, felt as though it brought my soul back to life.

Special thanks to Cathy Heller and her podcast “Don’t Keep Your Day Job” for the inspiration to put this show together.  Her song “Gonna Make a Change” is featured in the intro and ending of this podcast.
