Ever since I was little, I was called toxically positive.
If someone was sad- I’d try to cheer them up and it was often replied to with “you’d never understand how I feel, you have no idea what it’s like to be depressed.”
I’ve worked in psychiatric hospitals.
And homeless shelters
And with youth in foster care
I can’t tell you how many times people have said those words to me.
And the thing is, no one knows what someone else is really going through .
We all have silent battles.
Sometimes our pain becomes our purpose, and we need to put our egos to the side so that our stories can help someone else.
I want you to know-
We always have a choice.
I can choose to shut down or pick myself up.
I can choose to get derailed by the mean comments or I can break the cycle and choose understanding.
I can choose to accept those who reject me.
I can choose to be compassionate when someone makes me feel shame.
I can choose to be the person I needed – instead of the person who hurt me.
I can choose to feel all the uncomfortable feelings and own my story and let go of the fear of humiliation- because your opinion of me is none of my business.
I can see my pain as my purpose- and realize that rejections are just a redirection- to encourage me to go deeper and try harder and keep showing up.
Because those people who are calling me toxically positive- probably really need to hear what I’m sharing.
And I will do whatever I can to help them find their way back home to themselves
Because I know what’s it’s like to feel how they feel.
And that’s why I keep showing up.
You might wonder why I’m over sharing. I’m here because I want to show you that we’re all hurting- we’re all flawed. Nobody is perfect.
And this isn’t about me.
I hope you realize that you can change your mind – you always have a choice. You can create clear priorities.
You can be exactly what you need .
You are safe
You have everything you need and you can start right now.
You have the power to change your habits.
You can start making choices to make yourself feel better.
I hope you realize how strong you are and that you are needed.
I hope you begin to love yourself fully.
I want you to feel good and choose to live and chase your dreams and take life by the horns- stop sitting it out- please start singing and dancing and let people assume you’re toxically positive if they have to- because it feels so much better to be happy than it does to be in despair.
and please realize that no one is exempt from being able to choose to be happy.
And that I know you can get there . You just have to make the choice that this is what you want.

I used to think it was selfish to focus on self care, but then I realized that when you show up with good energy, your light inspires the light to force its way out of others so that they can let themselves sparkle too. You are an instrument of change, adding so much light to the world.

Special thanks to Cathy Heller and her podcast “Don’t Keep Your Day Job” for the inspiration to put this show together, and for her song Gonna Make a Change which is featured in the episode.
