Today on the Let Yourself Sparkle Podcast, I talk about how we need to let go of the shame of taking mediation for mental health.

Just like any other part of your body, if your blood wasn’t clotting, or the opposite, if your blood was too thick…. or if you didn’t have a thyroid, or you have Diabetes… if your body was not working right, you would feel no shame in taking medication to save your life.

Why then is it any different when it comes to our brains!? Our brains are just as much a vital part of our body – as all the other parts.

Katy Perry said she felt “ashamed” of taking antidepressants, especially after recording the song “Firework”- which communicated a message of positivity and self-love. But she added, the medication helped her recover after weeks of not being able to get out of bed.”

We need to realize that often times, taking medication- IS SELF LOVE!

Lady Gaga shared that in addition to therapy, antipsychotic medication has helped her manage her symptoms and without it, she would “spiral very frequently.”

These two women – are by far – in my humble opinion… the coolest frekin people alive. I LOVE their music, I love how they dress, I love their mindset- did you know Katy Perrys songs have been like medicine to me – to lift me up when I’m down?

And Lady Gaga- well she started a foundation called the Born This Way Foundation- and she has helped countless of people struggling with mental illness.

Anyway, sometimes despite all our efforts to sing and dance, and jump and meditate, we still need additional help.

And there is no shame in getting the help we need- be it talking therapy, or medication.

And YES, every single thing I share on the podcast will help you feel so much better, not instead of, but in addition to.

Sometimes we need a little extra help from a person or a pill- to get us sparkling our absolute brightest. And I repeat- there is zero shame in taking care of yourself.

You know your body. If you need additional support, please go get it.

I used to think it was selfish to focus on self care, but then I realized that when you show up with good energy, your light inspires the light to force its way out of others so that they can let themselves sparkle too. You are an instrument of change, adding so much light to the world.

Special thanks to Cathy Heller and her podcast “Don’t Keep Your Day Job” for the inspiration to put this show together, and for her song Gonna Make a Change which is featured in the episode.
